About Us

Formerly Virgin Water Outfitters, the company was renamed Trout and Timber Outfitters in 2010 to incorporate the expansion of an Arkansas duck hunting operation. We thought the new name might mold to our identity better.

Forrest Smith, the owner, operator, and chief story teller of Trout and Timber, is a fourth generation Arkansas Native. He started fishing the White River twenty years ago and has been guiding it for ten. Before guiding, he fished competitively on an international stage. Although his ambitions and drive suited the format of the tournaments, he decided that the competition took the enjoyment out of the sport he cared about so much. He found that guiding and teaching others the joy of fly fishing was much more rewarding.  His new calling again spurred him to travel all over God's green earth searching for something with fins that was more than eager to eat a fly. Five seasons guiding in Alaska, three in Chile, one in Missoula, MT, and a brief stint chasing redfish in the southeast, Forrest finally settled back down and decided to guide 12 months out of the year in Arkansas.  His experience fishing extensively in so many world-class locations has enabled him to incorporate styles and techniques previously foreign to the area. Forrest has adapted and molded many of them to his home water, and separated his style from what he refers to as the "nymph grinding masses". In other words, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and even more to catch a fish. He enjoys developing new aspects to his arsenal, and has consistently pushed the envelope in fly fishing.  He enjoys teaching fishermen of every age and ability. Being very personable and witty (with more than occasional tug of the line) has kept his clientele coming back year after year.  Believe it or not, Forrest does get the occasional day off the river. When he does, he really enjoys blowing "party whistles" (duck calls) at greenheads, and sitting in a tree with a stick and string in hopes that a whitetail with an aesthetically pleasing rack walks by.
